With roughly 150 attendees, tons of new paddlers, $307 raised for First Descents kayak camp I would have to call this event a screaming success. Congratulations to EPIC Adventures, The Bailey Family, Kent Wales, Dustin, Gordon and everyone else who participated in the planning process: you are all hero's of the Spokane River.

The Day's Events:
Raft Race: 5 boats put into the current at Mcguire park and participated in all out downriver sprint through three gates that pushed even the fittest teams. Peak 7 was well represented with two teams, each filled with strength and energy that pushed them to the finish line. Several citizen boats jumped into the mix giving everyone a run for the prize. But the prize winners were the Center for Justice rafting team. Formed in an effort to honor the work done by the Center for Justice does on river related issues including but not limited to dissolved oxygen levels, Avista FERC process, water rights and many other issues where they were ongoing advocates for a more usable river! Formed by a naked pilot, visual clarity expert and the river lawyer himself this team meant business and won the bragging rights for the next year.
The next event was the head to head Boater Cross that involved 14 eager paddlers. divided into two heats the racers went through a endro style first round with the top three from each heat advancing. The finals were a heated elbow knocking sprint to the finish in true Boater X style.
the last event of the day was the first Hydrotherapy Session of the season. with full afternoon sun on a 17k Corbin Wave we had 11 paddlers get out and show the huge crowd what freestyle was all about.
Two talented paddlers shone in the crowd of locals and displayed what Hydrotherapy Sessions are really all about. With a first appearance to Spokane Matt XX, currently from Bellingham and sponsored by Dragorossi Kayaks, showed the crowd the best talent from the wetside of Washington State.
The other paddler who stood out surfed Corbin for the first time... in a competition... in front of a crowd of 80 people... at 17k CFS - and looked good doing it. Congratulations to Kristy Bailey - Thank you for using Hydrotherapy Sessions to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Anyone have a pic of her first surf?
The event was wrapped up in style with Emcee Dustin Semb at the healm. He did a great job holding this event together and giving away the schwag even though his injury kept him dry. Dustin may have been the shiny face of the day but there were several students from EWU pulling strings to help Dustin bring the whole thing togheter. These unsung heros made it happen!
Major thanks again to the event organizers. Further thanks to event supporters tony Zanetti, creator of donkey flip.com and Nookie/Dragrossi guru. NRS stepped in once again to support their local community as did Mountain Gear, Mountain Goat and GSI.
