Liquid Thoughts by Dave Turner
Paddlers and friends of all ages and skills convened at Stateline, ID for the first session of the 2008 Spokane River HydroTherapy Sessions. The brainchild of Travis Nichols - local kayaker and advocate - is now in it's second season after a well received debut in 2007. 18 enthusiastic competitors gave everything they had at Dead Dog Hole to do their best. It was a very cool vibe indeed- one of camaraderie, positive support , joy and fun. To me it's a very special thing to assembly a group of people with a common interest and goal - in this case a love of the river, freestyle kayaking and trying to huck your best in a friendly, competitive setting. We really have an amazing kayaking community in the Inland North West and this event brought many of us together. I think everyone left that first night of May very stoked and excited about the HydroTherapy Sessions and it was evident to me the next day at Dead Dog that everyone was trying to step up their "game" for the future sessions. This event was a huge success - great sponsors, good weather, great venue, doable river level and a great turnout! My hopes are this event will become an Inland NW tradition for years to come. When I'm old(er) and ready to leave this world, the memories of hanging out with friends in the eddy, surfing and this event will be vivid and bring a smile to my wrinkled face!
Thank you so much Travis! Way to go Inland NW kayakers! We Rule! Now let's do it again and throw down on May 22nd!
